The International Association of Administrative Professionals is a not-for-profit professional association for office professionals with approximately 28,000 members and affiliates and nearly 600 chapters worldwide. Our mission is to enhance the success of career-minded administrative professionals by providing opportunities for growth through education, community building and leadership development. The association founded in 1942 as the National Secretaries Association to provide a professional network and educational resources for secretarial staff. The association's name was changed in 1998 to the International Association of Administrative Professionals to encompass the large number of varied administrative job titles and recognize the advancing role of administrative support staff in business and government.

Our core values

Integrity We demonstrate this cornerstone of our profession through
honesty, accountability and high ethical standards.
Respect We create respect within our profession and association
through listening, understanding and acknowledging
member feedback.
Adaptability We ensure the success of our association by embracing
positive change and by nurturing diversity, creativity and
visionary thinking.
Communication    We cultivate and maintain excellence by remaining
approachable at all levels, communicating openly and
building strong relationships.
Commitment We are steadfast in our goals to develop learning
opportunities for career-minded administrative
professionals and to strengthen efficiency and effectiveness.

Birmingham History

In the first few months of 1942, the preliminary work necessary to the establishment of a national association of secretaries was accomplished. In May 1942, Articles of Incorporation were filed under the laws of the State of Missouri. The National Secretaries Association (NSA) was born. The first chapter was in Topeka, Kansas. “International” was added to our name in 1954 when Canada became the first non-USA country to have full representation in NSA.

On March 9, 1943, the Birmingham Chapter of the National Secretaries Association received its charter. There were 33 members. For six years the Birmingham Chapter was the only chapter in Alabama. In 1952, the Alabama Division came into being with three chapters.

The Certified Professional Secretaries® (CPS®) program was established in 1950. In 1953, Birmingham was established as a CPS® Examination Center. The Certified Administrative Professional® (CAP®) program was established in 2001.

Birmingham's first secretarial seminar was held in 1955 with 214 present.

Reflecting the professional image of its members, the Association voted to change its name to Professional Secretaries International (PSI®), and it became official on February 12, 1981. The tagline “The Association for Office Professionals” was added in 1995.

Reflecting the broader range of job titles and expanded responsibilities held by today’s administrative support staff, a vast majority of Professional Secretaries International member delegates voted to change their association’s name to the International Association of Administrative Professionals® (IAAP®). The new name became effective at the close of the International Convention and Education Forum, August 5, 1998.

The history of the International Association of Administrative Professionals is a record of faith, courage and tenacity of its members. We should look upon the record of the first years of our existence as a prelude to the history we are making today and shall be making in the future.

Throughout our history runs this bright thread of faith because of which our Association has developed to its present state of usefulness and maturity.
